I was teaching and the increasing workloads left me feeling stressed, negative and undervalued. Working while feeling tired and miserable was turning me into a person I didn't want to be. I wanted to get off the treadmill.
Does this sound familiar to you too?
Many experienced teachers in New Zealand are thinking of leaving. Earlier this year Stuff reported teachers opting out of full-time work because they are feeling burnt out by increasing workloads.
The results expected from the community, the Government and society as a whole heaps constant pressure on top of doing whats best for the children. In my case, the leadership in the school and internal relationships with colleagues were becoming intolerable. Staff morale was low. Unfortunately, things got personal and I got to a stage where I felt this could only be sustained for so long.
I don't know how it is for you. Honestly, I'm not even sure how you got to be reading this. But for me...I couldn't remember what "a life" was anymore. I was looking for freedom. I was looking for fullfilment in my work. I was looking for fun. I was looking for more money than to just barely pay the bills and I wanted to get up in the mornings feeling happy with life.
Have you been searching for something else?
What else could I do? I checked out relieving teaching, teaching overseas, other careers where I might transfer my skills, selling online, personal development. I got into Tony Robbins, The Secret, Abraham Hicks... Maybe you've done this too?
"The most overwhelming issue related to (NZ) teachers considering leaving the profession, according to teacher responses, is the workload associated with change, the deterioration in student behaviour and the degree to which teachers feel misunderstood and undervalued by the wider public. Often this misunderstanding is articulated in terms of the misconceptions teachers believe people from the wider community have about teachers’ ‘official’ hours of work and holidays."
And, it's not just teachers in New Zealand, but teachers in other countries too.
Well, for me the search has ended. This issue is not just about teachers who are dissatisfied, its the whole "traditional employment" model is changing rapidly.

There is currently something huge happening all over the world and it's going on without many of us "Baby Boomers" even realising it.
Just one example of a leader in this change is Reid Hoffman. Don't worry if his name doesn't mean anything to you (me too), but he's co-founder of LinkedIn and former COO of PayPal, which I'm pretty sure you will have heard of. Here he discusses the concepts behind his latest book, "The Startup Of You" about traditional careers and todays employment climate.
There's a whole new digital world on the internet. I intend to be part of it.
I still teach, although in a new school. This is allowing me to transition from a "traditional job" to a "digital life" that aligns with what I truly believe in.
I'm becoming educated on how to navigate the digital economy. I am applying what I learn and one day I hope to help other people like me.
I found a golden opportunity that I thought it was out of my reach. In the end it was probably the hope of a better life that drove me to get started and I feel incredibly optimistic about my life now!
I want to share with you the message that helped me overcome the pain and problems I was experiencing of no time freedom, exhaustion, not enough money, unfulfulled, missing out on family time. This video series will talk to you about exactly what you may be experiencing and how you to can work to overcome these problems.
